Yummy, scrummy pancakes, is there anything better? This year, Pancake Day falls on Tuesday 9th February, otherwise known as Shrove Tuesday.
While undeniably delicious, nowadays forget restricting yourself to just regular sugar and golden syrup toppings. With a whole host of unique and scrumptious flavours available to you and your fingertips, why not try something new?
Here are our three best tips for savouring, feasting and perfecting your pancakes this Pancake Day:
1. Sweet or Savoury
If you’ve got a sweet tooth, why not opt for the deliciously sweet treat of Nutella? Or pecans, maple syrup and yoghurt? Craft a pancake that really does look too good to eat. If you’re more of a savoury pancake eater, then salmon, avocado and creme fraiche may provide a happier alternative. And those staples of ham and cheese are also a firm favourite. If you’re feeling fruity and exotic, then the beautiful flavours and combinations of mango, melon and greek yoghurt could have your taste buds both tickling and tingling with delight.
2. Give it a Whirl
You haven’t lived if you haven’t tossed that almost-done pancake up as high as you possibly can and had that oh-so-nervous moment where you worry that it may just hit the kitchen ceiling and stay there for the rest of the day. Childhood memories, friendly gatherings or Pancake Day with all the family just aren’t complete without a whirl and a flip of a pancake. Extra points if you can flip it all the way over!
Here are a few little tips though. Follow the recipe to a tee to make sure you have the right consistency. When it comes to ingredients, pay close attention to the batter in particular. Once you’ve got that perfected, then it’s all about the pan. A solid, reasonably-priced pan is far more likely to deliver the bacon than a cheap non-stick one that might just send your pancake well on its way to the ceiling, or fail to leave the pan entirely. Well, then it’s time to just give it a go. If at first you don’t succeed, try try and try to whirl it again.
3. Stack Em and Savour
When you’ve created the almost perfect pancakes, it’s now time to serve them up to you and your loved ones. How many can you stack before you realise why Shrove Tuesday only comes round once a year? Whether it’s 1 2, 3, or 6, don’t forget to complete them with your favourite sweet or savoury topping. After all, with Lent Wednesday to follow, surely you’re allowed a little treat or two in the shape of pancakes. And it’s not just the smell of the pancakes and eating them that is the only fun, making them is all part of it too. If stacking isn’t your game, what about a folded pancake oozing with taste and all-round scrumminess. Opt for a lemon meringue, banoffee or salted caramel pancake filling. You’ve then got all of your naughty dessert favourites, all day long. What a treat!
Head to a Pancake Day Event
Be inventive, be creative and be fun this year on Pancakes Day! Up and down the country, flippin’ brilliant events are hitting the streets to celebrate this well-established celebration, initially thought up as a way to use ingredients such as eggs and fats before the 40-day period of lent.
In 2016, why not stop by London’s numerous pancake races and see just how well your hand-eye coordination is. You can join in with the spirit of things by entering or watch from the sidelines. But just be careful, you may get swept away by the tasty aromas and smells of the awaiting pancakes. Or visit one of Manchester’s much-loved eateries, serving the day’s speciality: pancakes. You’ve got your eye on the prize there and won’t have to worry about any distractions.
